Inns & Taverns Floorplans

By Mexal of RPGAction.com (repost from RPGNow.com), February 07, 2002.

Highs and lows: A collection of fine inn & tavern floorplans, ready for use in any fantasy adventure but you do need to print them out for yourself!

This ESD (electronic software download) product is a fine collection of floorplans of a wide variety of inns and taverns, suitable for any fantasy game. Neatly packaged in HTML format, you may select the establishment best suited to the game you are planning from a gallery of thumbnails, and then view or print out the full-size version.

Each one is built on a 5-foot square grid, so if you are a miniatures-user all you need to do is print it out at a suitable size. And even if you’re not, you have at your fingertips a precise map showing where every door, window, table, etc. is located to either describe or show to your players. If you require moveable items barrels, tables or whatever you could try printing out and cutting up the ‘legend’ image that is intended to help you identify what everything is.

Presentation is clean and slick, making it easy to choose the particular set of plans that you want. Many of the establishments have more than one floor, and perhaps a cellar although I’m not sure I want to drink in one tavern that seems to have a torture chamber underneath!

This resource, although useful, requires some preparation on the GM’s part. Unless you take a computer along to your games, you will need to print out the floorplans that you intend to use in advance. Then you will need to decide who is there, and what they are doing, before the PCs arrive. While the general shape and contents of the rooms are readily apparent from the plan, you also have to provide more general descriptions of the surroundings and of course, the setting in which the inn or tavern is to be found.

Overall, it is an excellent set of plans, extremely useful for those who like high quality play aids to put before their players, especially those who write their own scenarios and so do not have the benefit of a published scenario complete with the necessary maps. If you have ever been reduced to hasty scribbling on a piece of paper in the middle of a game when an unexpected brawl breaks out, go and get this ESD and print out a few of the inns ready...
